Fitness and Ham

I mentioned a couple of months ago that I thought I would be using this site to talk about my venture into amateur radio. I still plan to do that, but I’ve been distracted since July with getting into shape. Yesterday, my copy of You Are Your Own Gym: The Bible of Bodyweight Exercises arrived from Amazon, and I’m hoping to use the lessons in the book to get into really great shape. I’m in my early fifties and starting to feel the effects of age. I plan to fight back.

As of this morning I weighed 189 pounds. I can do about 25 push-ups if I try really hard (many thanks to Fitocracy for helping me get this far!), I can jog a mile in about 12 minutes, and I can do a forearm plank for about one minute. I’ll detail my progress (or lack thereof) so that I can look back and see how I’ve been doing.

I grew up in New England, did a short stint in the U.S. Navy after high school, worked in various factories, built & renovated houses, and finally moved to the Carolinas in 1998 to start working at what was then a large regional bank and is now a really big nationwide bank. I work doing SharePoint management site management. After work I make soap, knit, ride my motorcycle, read, watch movies & eat. I ride a Yamaha V-Star 1300. I am pretty sure that I want to hike the Appalachian Trail someday, or possibly do a long-distance rowing trip. I'll be retiring in a few years, and hope to run a craft soap-making business to bring in some cash.
